DIGITAL DETOX

Reading Outdoors

Could you benefit from a digital detox?

How often do you truly switch off?

Had you heard of Zoom before the Covid pandemic?

Probably not.

Since 2020, we have seen a sharp rise in our addiction to tech. We spend more and more time glued to our phone or computer. We check our emails first thing in the morning and last thing at night. We check our phones for emails, messages and social media notifications, up to 78 times a day, according to research.

We are simply the victims of the shift in working practices that happened during the many lockdowns.

During the pandemic, the need to work remotely was inevitable and life saving. Online meetings became the norm. WhatsApp and text messages replaced the water cooler gossips.

Even yoga, meditation and other wellness modalities happened online.

But the negative side effects of this dependency on our small screens are real and felt today more than ever.

From social media anxiety, caused by seeing pictures of an ex colleague on yet another exotic holiday whilst you are stuck in Blighty, to decreasing attention span, headaches, depression, increasing loneliness, sleep disturbances, stress and so much more...

If you are familiar with any of these symptoms, you probably would benefit from reviewing your relationship with your phone.

It's never too late to implement healthy habits at home and here are some simple tips:

  • Invest in or dust off an alarm clock - Do not keep your phone on your bedside table - Your bedroom should be a tech free zone - Have a pile of books or magazines near your bed and read for a few minutes before bed time.

  • Turn off social media notifications - Only check your phone when you feel ready and not when you hear a "ping" - Stop the mindless scrolling - Regain control of the situation - You are in charge.

  • Have phone free/ social media free afternoons and then progress to full days.

  • Delete any Apps that you are not using anymore.

  • If you have a task to accomplish, could be tidying up a cupboard or filling in an application form, leave your phone in a different room - Without any distractions the task will be completed quicker, bringing in a sense of accomplishment!
